FLUORESCENT TUBE RECYCLING

04-Jul-2008
Fluorescent tubes can now be deposited for recycling at the Nannup Waste Management Facility.

Australians consume 50 to 60 million fluorescent tubes and HIB lamps per year.   Less than 1% is recycled.  The mercury contained in one fluorescent tube can potentially pollute ground water.

Due to its high toxicity landfill and incineration are no longer acceptable ways to dispose of mercury waste. However the mercury, glass, aluminium and phosphorus recovered from recycled tubes can be completely reused.

Fluorescent tubes can now be deposited for recycling at the Nannup Waste Management Facility.  Council has not considered a charge for the depositing of these items at this point in time though may do so in the future.

For further information please contact Klaus Mueller – Council’s Waste Management Officer on 97 717743 at the Shire of Manjimup during normal office hours.
