PROPOSED KERBSIDE RUBBISH AND RECYCLING SERVICE
Council at its May 2008 meeting resolved to call tenders for a combined kerbside rubbish and recycling collection service for the Nannup Townsite (and possible special rural localities at a later date) to commence in the 2008/09 budget year.
Council advertised the proposal in the March 2008 edition of the Nannup Telecentre Telegraph and three submissions of support were received.
The proposal will be based on the following:
· Be part of combined rubbish and recycling collection contract.
· Would provide a fortnightly recycling collection service and a weekly rubbish collection service.
· Cost to residents will be known at the conclusion of the tender process (and if Council accepts a tender) however for the recycling service it is estimated that the cost will be approximately $3.80 per fortnight for a contractor supplied bin or $2.50 per fortnight with a Council supplied bin. These prices are about the same as being currently charged in Bridgetown-Greenbushes. The costs for the rubbish collection service should be comparable to the existing cost to the weekly rubbish collection service.
· Continue to provide a recycling service at the landfill site for rural residents in the form of a drop off facility.
· Would have provisions in the contract to extend the service to outlying settlements (such as Jalbarragup), or new subdivisions if required in the future.
· Reduce the current landfill contract price by removing the cost of the recycling operations component in the contract.
· Proposed to extent the life of the tip site by diverting an estimated 20-25% volume of waste in the form of collected kerbside recyclables.
· Increase the amount of recyclables currently collected and reused. The contract will have provisions to ensure that collected recyclables are processed and not landfilled.
