PROPOSED KERBSIDE RECYCLING COLLECTION SERVICE FOR NANNUP
The Shire of Nannup is considering the provision of a kerbside recycling service for residents currently receiving a rubbish service and extending this service (household waste and recycling) to the special rural communities adjoining the Nannup Townsite including Jalbarragup.
Council at its December 2007 resolved the following:
That Council endorse the provision of a combined kerbside recycling and refuse collection service to the residents of Nannup and undertake community consultation for the kerbside recycling service and servicing the special rural areas prior to Council deliberating on the issue at a later meeting of Council.
The proposal will be based on the following:
· Be part of combined rubbish and recycling collection contract.
· Would provide a fortnightly recycling collection service.
· Cost to residents will be approximately $3.80 per fortnight for a contractor supplied bin or $2.50 per fortnight with a Council supplied bin. These prices are about the same as being currently charged in Bridgetown-Greenbushes.
· Continue to provide a recycling service at the landfill site for rural residents in the form of a drop off facility.
· Would have provisions in the contract to extend the service to outlying settlements (such as Jalbarragup), or new subdivisions if required in the future.
· Reduce the current landfill contract price by removing the cost of the recycling operations component in the landfill contract.
· Proposed to extent the life of the tip site by diverting between 20-25% volume of waste in the form of collected kerbside recyclables.
· Increase the amount of recyclables currently collected and reused. The contract will have provisions to ensure that collected recyclables are processed and not landfilled.
