Recycling At The Nannup Waste Management Facility

Persons who recycle at the Nannup Waste Facility are advised that due to the economic downturn for the price of recycled glass, it has become cost prohibitive to recycle glass.  Glass is therefore being disposed of in a designated disposal area located near the steel drop off area.  It is unclear how long this situation will exist for.  This matter is a problem throughout in particular small and remote regions which have low volumes of glass and are a long way from the market.

Glass can be still used to improve drainage at the Waste Facility and if alternative uses are found and/or the price of recycling glass improves, the glass can be retrieved without being contaminated by other refuse as it is being disposed of in an area set aside solely for glass waste.

Council is also investigating introducing a recycling service where the processing of all recycling products will be undertaken in conjunction with adjoining shires.  It is proposed that recyclables be transported to Manjimup (back loaded weekly with the refuse truck that collects townsite kerbside refuse) and processed at a material recovery facility in Manjimup.

It is hoped that this will improve the economies of scale by virtue of improved quantities, handling procedures and transport options to market will be realised.

The logistics and costs will be investigated prior to Council entering into any contract with the service provider.
