Renowned Western Australia Hip Hop masters Optamus Downsyde and Flewnt will be coming to the Nannup Family Fun Day on 17 January. Young people aged 12- 17 years are welcome to join in on the Hip Hop workshop on the day.
Hip Hop is the most popular genre of the last 50 years, and is a medium for freedom of creativity to explore ones thoughts.
Well known First Nations rappers, Scott Griffiths (Optamus) and Joshua Eggington (Flewnt) produce hip hop music and have a background in youthwork. Some of the musicians they have collaborated with include Hilltop Hoods and Drapht.
Scott “Optamus” Griffiths is part of one of Australia's most respected and revered hip hop groups Downsyde having played every major festival in the country and travelled overseas as well. Josh “Flewnt” Eggington; a Noongar and Wongi man, activist and hip-hop artist is empowering and educating Indigenous youth and the wider Australian community on culture and truth-telling through hip-hop music.
The workshop, Hip Hop 101, will use the therapeutic nature of music to provide a positive outlet to build self-esteem in young people by engaging them in a meaningful way. The workshop aims to inspire young people in Beat production in a safe space.
Optamus said the Hip Hop workshop gives the young people a sense of belonging and community.
“This high energy activity provides the kids an opportunity to come together in a safe space and explore the art of song and rhyme to tell a story.” Often these workshops build confidence, resilience and vocal intelligence.
The Go for 2 & 5, Nannup Family Fun Day is an annual event held at Foreshore Park in Nannup on the third Tuesday in January. The family event promotes health and wellbeing, setting our young people up with a positive experience for the year ahead.
The Hip Hop 101 workshop will see the young people beat making and electronic drumming, under the guidance of Optamus and Flewnt, and their families.
