Planning an Event in Nannup? We’re Here to Help

Nannup’s community events are a big part of what makes our town special. From small gatherings to larger festivals, these events bring people together and create lasting connections. If you’re planning something that’s open to the public, you may need to submit an event application—and it’s there to support you, not make things harder.

The event application process helps ensure events are safe, inclusive and well‑planned, while also protecting organisers through appropriate approvals, insurance and risk planning. It allows the Shire to support you early, identify what’s required, and help your event run smoothly on the day.

Why Event Applications Are Important

When an event is open to the public, advertised, or held on Shire land or facilities, the Shire has a responsibility to ensure health and safety requirements are met. This includes things like emergency access, food safety, accessibility, insurance and minimising impacts on neighbours.

Applying early helps:

  • protect event organisers from risk and liability,
  • keep participants and volunteers safe,
  • ensure accessibility and inclusion are considered, and
  • avoid last‑minute issues or delays.

For small, low‑risk activities, the Shire offers a Small Community Event Application, making it easier for local groups to host simple events while still covering the basics.

Event vs Private Function – What’s the Difference?

Common Examples

Usually a Private Function

  • Birthday party at a private home
  • Wedding reception with invited guests
  • Club AGM or members‑only meeting
  • Family reunion in a hired hall (not advertised)

Usually a Public Event

  • Community markets or festivals
  • Fundraising events open to everyone
  • School holiday activities advertised publicly
  • Sporting events, fun runs or bike races
  • Events with food trucks, races or live music

If your activity is open to the community—even if it’s free—it’s usually considered a public event.

We’re Here to Support You

The Shire’s Community Development Team works alongside event organisers to guide you through the process, explain what’s required, and help problem‑solve. If you’re unsure whether you need an application, or which form to use, a quick conversation early on can save time and stress later.

Our goal is simple: to help community events happen safely, smoothly and successfully.

If you’re planning an event or have questions, please contact the Community Development Team at the Shire of Nannup—we’re here to help every step of the way.
