Western Australians urged to register for TeleRedi ahead of extreme heat

With extreme heat events becoming more frequent across Western Australia, vulnerable community members are being encouraged to register for TeleRedi—a free, phoneโ€‘based welfare check service funded by the WA Government and delivered by the Australian Red Cross.

TeleRedi provides wellbeing checkโ€‘in calls during heatwaves for people at higher risk of heatโ€‘related illness, no matter where they live. Trained Red Cross volunteers contact registered participants regularly, helping ensure their safety during periods of dangerous heat. If a call goes unanswered or a participant appears distressed, an escalation process is activated to connect them with timely support.

The service is designed for people who are more vulnerable during extreme heat, including:

  • those who live alone
  • older people
  • people with disabilities or chronic health conditions
  • individuals recovering from illness or injury
  • people experiencing mental health challenges

Carers are also encouraged to register themselves or the people they support.

How to register:
Visit the Australian Red Cross registration page: https://www.redcross.org.au/teleredi/

Minister for Health and Mental Health Meredith Hammat said:
“Extreme heat can have serious and sometimes lifeโ€‘threatening impacts, especially for vulnerable Western Australians. TeleRedi provides reassurance that someone will check in on you—or your loved one—during heatwaves. Through investments like this, we’re helping keep Western Australians safe and connected to the support they need.”
