For more than 15 years, Nannup's much-loved Redback Spider Bike Rack has stood proudly in the Village Green, welcoming visitors and locals alike while adding a touch of creativity and character to the town centre.
Installed in May 2010, the Redback Spider was created by artist Irene Osborne as part of a series of Cycle Art works celebrating the arrival of the Munda Biddi Trail to Nannup. Delivered in partnership with the Munda Biddi Foundation, the project reflected Nannup's growing reputation as a cycle-friendly destination and combined public art with practical infrastructure.
Funded through the Local Drug Action Group and Country Arts WA, the artwork has served not only as a bike rack but also as a unique piece of public art, becoming a familiar landmark within the community. Over the years, it has featured in countless family photos, sparked conversations and even become a popular geocache location, attracting many children and visitors eager to uncover its hidden treasure.
The Shire of Nannup recognises that the Redback Spider holds a special place in the hearts of many residents. For some, it represents memories of community events, cycling adventures and time spent in the town centre. It has become part of Nannup's story and identity.
Unfortunately, after years of exposure to the elements and regular use, the artwork is now showing significant signs of wear and deterioration. To ensure this iconic piece can be enjoyed for many years to come, the Shire has committed to retaining, restoring and relocating the Redback Spider rather than removing it permanently.
Over the coming months, the artwork will be carefully removed and professionally refurbished, preserving its unique character while ensuring it remains safe and fit for purpose. Once restoration is complete, the Redback Spider will be given a new home at the Pine Ridge MTB Park in Cundinup.
The new location, near the bike park car park, will allow the artwork to return to its original purpose as a fun and functional bike rack within a cycling environment. Surrounded by riders, families and visitors exploring the trails, the Redback Spider will continue its connection to cycling culture and the spirit of adventure that inspired its creation.
While the artwork may be moving from the Village Green, its story is far from over. This relocation ensures a treasured piece of Nannup's public art heritage is preserved, celebrated and given a renewed purpose, allowing future generations to enjoy this quirky and iconic artwork for years to come.
The Redback Spider has been part of Nannup's journey since 2010. Through restoration and relocation, it will continue to be part of the community's future.
