This week has marked a proud milestone in Nannup's history as we celebrate becoming Western Australia's third accredited Trail Town and officially opening Pine Ridge MTB Park.
For generations, Nannup's identity was built on the timber industry. As major logging activities came to an end, our community recognised the need to diversify and create new opportunities for the future. Through extensive community consultation, research and strategic planning, a bold vision emerged in 2017: to transform Nannup from a timber town into a premier trail destination.
It was an ambitious goal that would take years of determination, partnership and persistence. Along the way, Council, staff, volunteers, businesses, funding partners and community members worked together to overcome challenges and secure funding opportunities that gradually turned the vision into reality.
What began with Nannup's recognition as a Regional Bike Hub evolved into a connected network of trail experiences, including Tank 7 MTB Park, the Town-to-Tank Link, Experience Nannup, signposted gravel and road cycling routes, Ngoolark MTB Jump Park, the Southern Bridges Project and now Pine Ridge MTB Park.
The opening of Pine Ridge represents the final major piece of the Trail Town journey. Once a golf course and before that part of Nannup's forestry landscape, the site has been thoughtfully reimagined as a sustainable mountain bike park that respects its heritage while creating new opportunities for recreation and tourism.
Trail Town accreditation recognises communities that deliver exceptional trail experiences, quality visitor infrastructure and strong connections between trail users, local businesses and the wider community. It also positions Nannup as an internationally recognised trail destination, increasing visibility and creating opportunities for tourism, economic growth and community wellbeing.
The significance of this achievement was reflected in the strong attendance at the official opening on Wednesday 23 September, where more than 80 representatives gathered from organisations that have supported Nannup's Trail Town journey. Attendees included Rick Wilson MP, Tourism WA, the Munda Biddi Trail Foundation, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA), Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport, Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), neighbouring local governments, and local organisations including the Nannup Flower and Garden Festival, Chestnut Brae, Australia's South West, Southern Forests and Valleys, Nannup MTB Club, WestCycle, Gravity Girls, fellow Trail Town representatives and tourism operators. Their collective support, advocacy, expertise and investment have played an important role in helping transform a community vision into a recognised trail destination.
This achievement represents far more than new trails. It reflects a community-led vision for Nannup's future, one that honours our heritage, strengthens community connections, and creates lasting economic, recreational and lifestyle benefits for generations to come.
