How to Prepare for Stormy and Adverse Weather

Western Australia’s storm season can bring strong winds, heavy rainfall and sudden flash flooding. Preparing your home and family early can significantly reduce risks and help keep you safe.

Before the Storm

Taking a few simple steps around your property can prevent damage and keep your household prepared:

  • Trim back branches near your home to stop them falling on your roof or car.
  • Clear gutters and downpipes so rainwater can flow freely during heavy falls.
  • Secure outdoor items such as furniture, trampolines and loose equipment that could become dangerous in strong winds.
  • Prepare an emergency kit including a batteryโ€‘powered radio and spare batteries, a torch, first aid supplies and any essential items your household may need.

If you live in an area at risk of flash flooding or isolation:

  • Have enough canned food, water and essential medications to last five to seven days.
  • Store important documents like identification and insurance papers in a safe, waterproof location.
  • Fill your vehicle’s fuel tank in case you need to leave quickly or experience prolonged power loss.

During the Storm

Once the storm arrives, stay indoors and avoid travelling unless absolutely necessary. Keep your emergency kit close and listen for alerts and updates.
