The creativity, curiosity and unique perspectives of Nannup's young people were on display recently at the "Through Our Eyes" Photo Exhibition, a project developed through the Shire of Nannup's Youth Zone program.
Supported by funding from the Alcohol and Drug Foundation (ADF) and the ongoing commitment of the Nannup Local Drug Action Group (LDAG), the project provided local young people with the opportunity to explore photography while strengthening friendships, building confidence and connecting with their community.
Coordinated through a partnership between the Shire of Nannup and the Nannup Community Resource Centre (CRC), Youth Zone sessions were led by Community Development Officer Apryl Longford and Youth Zone Coordinator Shealie Tarr.
"Photography was something new for our group, and it quickly became a fun and engaging way for young people to express themselves," said Ms Longford.
Using disposable cameras, participants learned a range of photography techniques, including composition, perspective, bird's-eye and bug's-eye views, and the rule of thirds. Unlike modern digital photography, the project required patience and a willingness to embrace the unexpected.
"Once the shutter was pressed, there was no opportunity to check the image or take another shot. The young people had to trust their instincts and creativity."
The result is a collection of authentic photographs that capture moments, memories and observations from the perspective of local youth.
The exhibition features a diverse range of subjects, from friendships and favourite places to creative self-portraits and everyday objects. One photograph of a simple rubbish bin even sparked deeper conversations about waste, lifestyles and personal choices, demonstrating that meaningful stories can be found in the most unexpected places.
Every image tells a story, and visitors are invited to hear those stories firsthand through QR codes displayed alongside the photographs. By scanning the codes, community members can listen to the young photographers share what is important to them about Nannup and why they chose their images.
The project complements the Shire's successful Oral History Project, which has already captured 25 stories from older members of the community. Together, these projects preserve local stories across generations and highlight the shared values that connect people of all ages.
While the exhibition celebrates photography, the project's greatest achievement is the sense of belonging it has fostered.
"At its heart, Youth Zone is about connection, community and creating a safe and welcoming space where young people can come together, share experiences, have fun and simply be themselves," Ms Longford said.
"As you listen to the voices behind the photographs, you'll discover that the things that matter most to young people are often the same things that matter to everyone: family, friends, community and feeling connected."
The Through Our Eyes Photo Exhibition offers a powerful reminder that young people have valuable stories to tell and unique perspectives to share. Through a simple camera lens, they have captured moments that celebrate who they are, what they value and the community they call home.
