Understanding E‑Waste and How the Shire of Nannup Can Help
- What is E‑Waste?
Electronic waste—commonly known as e‑waste—refers to any electrical or electronic item that is no longer wanted, no longer working, or has become outdated. This includes a wide range of household and workplace items such as:
- batteries
- televisions, computers and accessories
- mobile phones and tablets
- light globes
- kitchen appliances
- white goods
- power tools, audio equipment and other electronics
E‑waste is one of the fastest‑growing waste streams in Australia, driven by rapid technology upgrades and increasing use of electronic products.
- Why E‑Waste Must Be Carefully Disposed Of
E‑waste contains materials that can be harmful to people and the environment if not managed properly. Many products include metals and chemicals such as lead, mercury, lithium and cadmium. If these go to landfill, they can leak into soil and waterways, creating long‑term pollution risks.
Improper disposal has now been banned in Western Australia, and for good reason:
- hazardous components can cause fires, especially batteries
- toxic substances can pose risks to human health
- recyclable materials—such as aluminium, copper, plastics and rare earth metals—are lost instead of being recovered and reused
By recycling e‑waste responsibly, we protect our community, reduce environmental harm and support a more sustainable circular economy.
- How the Shire of Nannup Supports Safe E‑Waste Disposal
The Shire of Nannup has introduced several measures to make responsible disposal easy and accessible for all residents:
✔ New E‑Waste Bins at the Nannup Waste Facility
A range of clearly marked e‑waste collection bins is available at the Waste Facility. Different types of e‑waste must be separated for safe processing, so staff are available to help if you're unsure where your item belongs.
✔ Additional Drop‑Off Points in Town
You can also take selected small electrical items and household batteries to:
- Nannup Post Office
- Nannup Hardware
These items are handled through approved recycling programs.
✔ Supporting WA’s E‑Waste Landfill Ban
The Shire is actively participating in Western Australia's statewide initiative to keep e‑waste out of landfill and ensure it is processed through safe, accredited recycling pathways.
