The Western Australian Government is continuing to provide weekly updates on H5 Avian Influenza (bird flu) to keep communities informed and prepared. Ongoing surveillance, biosecurity measures and response planning are helping to minimise impacts on wildlife, communities, livestock industries and the State's economy.
What to do
Community vigilance remains important. H5 bird flu is a reportable disease in Western Australia, and early reporting helps authorities detect and respond quickly to any potential spread.
What to do if you find sick or dead birds or wildlife:
- Avoid contact with sick or dead birds and animals. Sick and dead birds and other animals can carry diseases, including H5 bird flu, that can affect humans. Do not touch or move them unless necessary and you have appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Keep children and pets away from affected wildlife.
- Record details including the number of animals affected, species, location, date and time.
- Report sick or dead wild birds and animals to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888 (select the WA option).
- Report orphaned or injured wildlife to the Wildcare Helpline on 9474 9055.
- Stay informed by following the WA Government's weekly bird flu updates and advice.
