For local cyclist Vanessa Johnson, competing in the UCI Gravel World Championships in Nannup was a particularly special experience. Having already competed in four previous Gravel World Championships around the world, the opportunity to race for a world title on the roads and trails she knows so well made this event unlike any other.
"It felt surreal to be racing a World Championship on my home roads," Vanessa said. Lining up among some of the world's best gravel riders, Vanessa had one concern on her mind before the race began. "I hope it doesn't rain too much and turn the course to peanut butter."
The challenging course delivered plenty of tough moments, particularly on the climbs. "The three big climbs were the hardest thing for me - Brockman, Spruce and Folly."
Despite the physical demands of the race, one moment stands out above all others.
"The standout moment was going up Folly climb and having my name shouted by so many people." - The encouragement from spectators, volunteers and fellow cycling enthusiasts helped spur her on throughout the event.
"The support around the course from local spectators, volunteers and the WA cycling community was uplifting, and I felt so proud that my hometown had embraced the event."
Vanessa was forced to dig deep in the closing stages of the race. "The final section of climbs from Uranium Road to Tank 7 - I knew there was a rider from my category not far behind me and I had to push on the final climbs to stay ahead."
Her determination paid off, with Vanessa finishing in the top 10 of her category.
Looking back, she is equally proud of what the event showcased to the world.
"It was wonderful to know that riders from around the world could finally see how great our landscapes are for gravel cycling." Vanessa hopes the championships create a lasting legacy for the region. "I hope this brings more cycling tourists to Nannup."
She also encourages anyone interested in cycling to get involved. "Get in touch with an AusCycling Club to get support on your cycling journey. 4Five+ Athlete Collective is female-focused and we have a chapter based in Nannup - I'm the Chairperson. We hold events suited to novices of all genders."
Reflecting on the experience, Vanessa shared a heartfelt message with the community that supported riders throughout the weekend.
"As a local rider I was so incredibly proud to be able to represent my country on home soil: the support from Nannup's wonderful community was both inspiring and humbling."
