In a small town like Nannup, community is not just something we talk about—it’s something we live. It’s in the quiet acts of service, the steady hands in times of need, and the volunteers who step forward when it matters most. This First Responders’ Day, 10 June 2026, we take a moment to recognise and celebrate those remarkable individuals who help keep our community safe, connected and cared for.
At the heart of these efforts is Jenny Forbes, proudly named Nannup’s Australia Day Senior Citizen of the Year). Jenny is a highly respected and much-loved figure whose contribution to the community spans years of dedicated service.
Through her leadership with St John Ambulance, Jenny has not only provided essential first-aid support at countless local events, but has also played a vital role in mentoring and guiding new volunteers. Her calm presence, deep knowledge and unwavering willingness to help others reflect a genuine commitment to community wellbeing. Whether she’s supporting a major event or offering quiet encouragement behind the scenes, Jenny embodies the very best of what it means to serve.
Jenny’s story is not just one of service—it is one of kindness, generosity and connection. Her work reminds us that first responders are not only found in emergency situations, but also in the everyday moments where care and compassion make all the difference.
This spirit of volunteerism is also captured in the powerful oral history of Warren Smith, whose firsthand experiences as a local first responder offer a deeply personal insight into what it means to answer the call. Through his story, Warren shares the reality of volunteering in a regional community—the challenges, the responsibility, and the profound sense of purpose that comes with helping others when they need it most.
We encourage everyone to take a moment to listen to Warren’s story and reflect on the extraordinary contribution of our volunteers:

First Responders’ Day is also a time to inspire the next generation to understand and appreciate these roles. On Tuesday 9 June, the Nannup Library will host a special Rhyme Time session, where Lorraine will be reading My First Emergency—a gentle and engaging way to introduce young children to the world of helpers in our community. There may even be a few familiar faces joining in, offering a chance for children to meet local first responders in a friendly and welcoming setting.
These moments—whether it’s a story shared, a hand- held, or a life saved—are what build the fabric of Nannup. They remind us that behind every uniform is a neighbour, a friend, a volunteer.
As we mark First Responders’ Day, we extend our heartfelt thanks to Jenny, Warren, and all those who give their time, skills and compassion so generously. Your dedication strengthens our community and ensures that Nannup remains a place where people look out for one another.
Because here in Nannup, being a first responder isn’t just about responding to emergencies—it’s about showing up, every day, for your community.
