Southern Bridges Shared Path Project Begins Construction
A long‑held community vision for Nannup is now becoming a reality, with construction commencing on the Southern Bridges Shared Path project—an initiative first imagined by the Nannup community in 2009. Over the past six years, the Shire of Nannup has actively sought technical expertise and secured multiple streams of grant funding to bring this significant safety and connectivity project to life.
The works, which form part of the broader Nannup Trail Town vision, will deliver two low‑level culvert crossings spanning Carlotta and Nannup Brooks. A new shared path will also be constructed, linking the existing Cockatoo Valley path network with the Nannup townsite. Once complete, the route will provide a safe, dedicated and accessible corridor for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders—removing them from the busy Vasse and Brockman Highways and addressing long‑standing community safety concerns.
Nannup Shire President Cr Tony Dean said the start of works marks a milestone for the community.
“For more than a decade, residents, trail users and partner agencies have identified this southern connection as a missing link in our network. After extensive planning, consultation, and securing the required environmental and heritage approvals, we are delighted to see construction finally underway.”
The project is supported through a combination of Federal, State and Local Government funding, including the Active Transport Fund, the Regional Recovery Partnership Program, the Western Australian Bicycle Network Grant, and a contribution from the Shire of Nannup.
Construction Timeframes and Traffic Impacts
Works have commenced and will continue into March. During this period, road users may experience intermittent delays due to construction vehicle movements and general site activity. Traffic management will be in place to ensure the safety of workers and motorists.
The Shire appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation while this important work is carried out.
A Safer, Healthier and More Connected Nannup
The new shared path will:
- Provide a safe alternative to highway travel for cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders
- Improve access between Cockatoo Valley, East Nannup and the town centre
- Support the realignment of the Munda Biddi Trail, enhancing user safety and experience
- Reduce transport emissions by encouraging active travel
- Strengthen Nannup’s status as a recognised Trail Town and boost recreation‑based visitation
