Cyclists Urged to Avoid Active Harvesting Areas for Their Own Safety
The Shire of Nannup is reminding all cyclists, visitors and locals alike, to avoid entering any active forestry harvesting areas over the coming months, following several recent incidents where riders have unintentionally entered restricted work zones.
Harvesting operations are currently underway in the Neon Road and Uranium Road area and are expected to continue for at least the next three months. Once works in the Uranium Road section are complete, crews will progressively move eastwards along the powerline corridor.
While the majority of operations are undertaken on weekdays, harvesting may occasionally occur on weekends—particularly if crews need to catch up on deliveries. Although weekend work is relatively rare, riders should not assume an area is safe simply because it is a Saturday or Sunday.
Despite extensive signage, including Road Closed, Restricted Area, Trucks on Road and Authorised Vehicles Only warnings, harvesting crews have reported multiple instances of cyclists riding directly through active worksites.
Active harvesting zones contain large machinery, heavy vehicles, falling timber, and rapidly changing ground conditions. Operators cannot always see or hear approaching cyclists, and a single moment of misjudgement could result in a serious injury.
For your safety, do not enter any area where harvesting is underway, even if the road appears quiet.
We encourage all users of our forests and gravel roads to:
- Obey all safety and road-closure signage
- Avoid any site where harvesting or log truck activity is occurring
- Use alternative routes until operations are complete
- Share this information with visiting cyclists or group members
Your cooperation helps keep both forest workers and cyclists safe.
