The Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer (PSHB) is currently confined to the Perth metropolitan area, where a Quarantine Area restricts the movement of untreated wood and woody plant materials to stop the pest spreading. Although PSHB has not been detected in Nannup, it is considered impossible to eradicate and is now under long term management in WA.
The invasive pest beetle responsible for the destruction thousands of mature trees in Perth now threatens the rest of the country, as WA authorities say they've been unable to eradicate it.
The shot-hole borer a tiny beetle that tunnels into trunks and stems, with tree removal the only known treatment.
What We Can Do in Nannup
- Avoid bringing wood or plants from Perth
The Quarantine Area limits movement of untreated wood and woody plants (>2 cm diameter). Keeping these materials local reduces the risk of accidentally transporting the pest. [wa.gov.au]
- Buy trees and plants from local suppliers
Choosing locally grown trees and shrubs helps ensure plant material hasn’t come from inside the Perth Quarantine Area and supports Nannup’s nurseries and growers.
- Use only local firewood
Firewood is a highโrisk pathway for PSHB spread. Only use wood sourced within our region, not from the Perth metro area. [wa.gov.au]
- Keep an eye on local trees
If you notice small round holes, sawdust-like frass, dark staining, or dieback, report it to DPIRD’s Pest and Disease Information Service.
By choosing local suppliers, avoiding highโrisk materials from Perth, and staying observant, our community can help protect Nannup’s forests, orchards, and gardens for the long term.
