There are several species of owls and night birds call Nannup home, including:
Southern Boobook (Ninox boobook) – Our most common owl, known for its familiar “boo-book” call at night.
Barn Owl (Tyto alba) – Often seen gliding silently over open areas, hunting rodents.
Masked Owl (Tyto novaehollandiae) – A less common species with a distinctive heart-shaped facial disc and a powerful build.
Tawny Frogmouth (Podargus strigoides) – Though not an owl, this master of camouflage is an important nocturnal predator.
Owls help control rodent populations naturally but face serious threats. Here's how you can help:
✅ Avoid Harmful Poisons – Use humane traps or safer rodenticides. ✅ Contain Cats at Night – Protect young owls from free-roaming cats. ✅ Drive Carefully at Night – to prevent collisions with hunting owls. ✅ Preserve Nesting Habitat – Protect old trees and install nest boxes.
