Celebrating Young Families and a Bright Future for Nannup’s Early Years

The Shire of Nannup is proud to celebrate the official opening of the Nannup Early Years Precinct and new nature‑based play space, a place designed especially for our youngest residents and the families who support them.

The precinct was officially opened on 17 May by Councillor Cheryle Brown, with more than 30 community representatives in attendance, many joined by their young children. The strong turnout reflected the importance of this space to local families and the shared commitment to supporting early childhood development in Nannup.

Located at the former kindergarten site on Adams Street, this much‑loved building and outdoor space has once again been filled with children’s laughter, connection and play. For generations, this site has played an important role in early childhood learning in Nannup, and its renewal represents both an honouring of our past and a strong investment in our community’s future.

This purpose‑built early years space is designed specifically for children aged 0–5 years, supporting play, exploration, creativity and social connection during the most formative years of childhood. It is also proudly home to the Nannup Family Collective and local Playgroup, whose advocacy, energy and care were central to shaping the vision and design of the precinct.

The space reflects Nannup’s strong connection to nature and place, with natural materials, open‑ended play elements and sensory experiences that encourage confidence, imagination and belonging. Importantly, it provides a welcoming and accessible place where young families can come together in the heart of town.

Looking Ahead: Facility Bookings from 2026–2027

While the space is now open and hosts regular playgroup sessions while being enjoyed as a valued community asset, formal facility bookings will be available from the 2026–2027 financial year.

Council is currently working through the required local government decision‑making processes, including confirming governance arrangements and determining appropriate fees and charges. These steps are an essential part of responsible local government and ensure community facilities are managed sustainably, equitably and transparently.

The community is encouraged to watch this space, with full facility booking information to be advertised in the new financial year once Council processes have been finalised.

A Community Effort

This project has been delivered through strong collaboration between the Shire of Nannup, the Nannup Family Collective, funding partners and the wider community. It stands as a clear example of what can be achieved when local advocacy, lived experience and shared values come together.

The Shire of Nannup sincerely acknowledges the financial contributions that made this project a reality. The building upgrade commenced in 2024, supported by the Shire of Nannup and the Australian Government through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Fund, which then enabled further investment through the WA Government’s Native Forestry Transition Community Small Grants FundLotterywest and Talison Lithium Pty Ltd, alongside direct materials and in‑kind contributions from the Shire.
These combined investments demonstrate strong confidence in regional communities and the importance of early‑years infrastructure that supports wellbeing, inclusion and connection.

Council looks forward to seeing the Nannup Early Years Precinct continue to grow as a hub for connection, learning and play — supporting young families today and nurturing the wellbeing of future generations.
