Exciting progress is continuing for the Nannup WA Geopark, with major milestones achieved following the announcement of Lotterywest funding in April 2026, alongside significant support from Talison Lithium and the Shire of Nannup.
The Geopark team has confirmed that contracts for the new Nannup WA Geopark Hub have now been signed, building licence certification has been completed, and the licence application has been submitted. A site survey has also been carried out, while work is progressing with the appointed steel supplier and ongoing consultation around sculpture features, signage, a three-dimensional map display and other interpretive elements planned for the site.
The Geopark continues to expand its education and citizen science initiatives through its Sequestered Carbon Evaluation Activity. Nannup District High School students have already begun measuring carbon growth and decline on school grounds as part of their learning program, helping students better understand their local environment. Discussions are also underway with the Shire of Nannup and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) to identify additional carbon monitoring sites that could be used by schools and educational institutions in the future.
Another recent development is the Geopark's submission for the proposed Nannup town entry statement. The concept incorporates locally sourced materials and artistic elements that reflect the region's forestry heritage, creative community and Indigenous culture.
Visitors and residents can also explore the popular Tigers in the Forest Trail through the Nannup Geopark App. Developed in partnership with the Nannup Chamber of Commerce, the trail highlights the town's thylacine-themed sculptures and provides fascinating insights into the history of the thylacine through accessible, family-friendly content.
The Geopark team is also preparing a dedicated members' area on its website, where reports, newsletters, conferences and workshop information will be available.
Chairperson Mark White acknowledged the dedication of the Geopark's volunteer team, whose expertise and commitment continue to drive the project forward.
