In Nannup, volunteering is more than lending a hand—it’s a reflection of the strong community spirit that defines our town. Across generations and organisations, local volunteers quietly contribute their time, skills and care, helping to build a connected, resilient and welcoming place for all. From emergency response to community sport, these contributions shape not only the services we rely on, but the sense of belonging that makes Nannup unique.

For volunteers like Lilika Allam, Deputy Local Manager of the Nannup SES, the journey began with curiosity and quickly grew into purpose. What started as joining her father at training has evolved into a deep commitment to supporting the community through emergencies. Through her role, Lilika has developed valuable life skills—learning to stay calm under pressure, problem-solve in challenging situations and prioritise safety when it matters most. Just as importantly, she has found a strong support network within the SES, where members look out for one another, debrief together, and share a sense of purpose. For Lilika, volunteering is not just about service—it’s about connection, confidence and personal growth.

This sentiment is shared by long-time community volunteer Ray Barnett, whose dedication to the Nannup Bowling Club recently saw him recognised as runner-up in the WA Good Sports Volunteer of the Year. As Vice-President and greenkeeper, Ray’s impact goes far beyond maintaining the greens. He creates an environment where people feel welcome, included and part of something bigger. His philosophy is simple: small acts—like offering a helping hand or starting a conversation—can lead to meaningful connections and a stronger, more supportive community.

Across Nannup, stories like these highlight a powerful truth: volunteering benefits both the community and the individual. It strengthens local services and events, while also offering opportunities to build friendships, develop new skills, and foster a sense of belonging and wellbeing. Volunteers play a vital role in supporting community safety, social connection and local pride—outcomes that align strongly with Nannup’s long-term vision for a thriving, inclusive community.

As we celebrate National Volunteer Week 2026, we acknowledge the many individuals who give their time so generously across Nannup. Whether through emergency services, community groups, sporting clubs or local initiatives, every contribution matters. Together, these efforts create a ripple effect—strengthening connections, supporting wellbeing, and ensuring Nannup remains a vibrant and caring place to live, work and visit.

Thank you to all our volunteers—you are at the heart of Nannup!
