Western Australia’s beekeeping community is facing a new challenge with the arrival of the Varroa mite—a tiny but destructive parasite that poses a serious threat to honeybee health and pollination services. In response, the National Varroa Mite Management Program (NVMMP) has launched a targeted initiative to help beekeepers across the state build their knowledge and resilience.
A one-day workshop has been developed to equip beekeepers with essential skills in Varroa biology, surveillance and monitoring techniques, integrated pest management strategies (including cultural, mechanical, and chemical controls), and record keeping. These resources are now being made available to support local training efforts and ensure consistent, high-quality education across the industry.
The workshop materials are freely accessible under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license, allowing communities and organisations to adapt and share the content widely. This collaborative approach is key to safeguarding WA’s bees and the vital role they play in agriculture and biodiversity.
