R U OK? Day Brings Warmth to Nannup Despite Winter Chill

Published on Monday, 15 June 2026 at 10:17:08 AM

Despite a cold and wet start to Sunday, 14 June, the spirit of community connection shone brightly in Nannup as the local R U OK? team transformed the Village Green into a welcoming hub of conversation, care and connection.

With their vibrant yellow trailers, marquees and tables standing out against the grey winter sky, the R U OK? setup created an inviting and highly visible presence that encouraged locals to stop, say hello and take a moment to connect. The pop of colour alone was enough to lift the mood, drawing people in for a chat, a warm drink and a sense of belonging.

A highlight of the day was once again the generous support of the Nannup Lions Club, whose volunteers delivered a perfectly executed sausage sizzle lunch. Working tirelessly under cover from the rain, the Lions Club team ensured everyone was well fed, adding to the welcoming atmosphere and reinforcing the strong culture of volunteerism in the community.

Adding to the comfort on a chilly day, the R U OK? team kept spirits high with freshly made coffee, steaming hot chocolates topped with marshmallows, and a few sweet treats. These simple gestures created space for people to linger a little longer, fostering genuine, meaningful conversations throughout the day.

The R U OK? team reported being very pleased with the level of attendance, particularly noting the quality of engagement. Many attendees stayed for extended periods, taking the opportunity to talk, listen and connect in a relaxed and supportive setting. It was clear that, even in less-than-ideal weather, the event achieved its purpose — bringing people together in a way that felt authentic and impactful.

At its heart, R U OK? is about inspiring and empowering everyone to meaningfully connect with the people around them. Events like this reinforce an important message: you do not need to be an expert to reach out — just a good friend and a great listener.

The R U OK? message is simple but powerful. It encourages everyone to take four easy steps that could help change a life:

  • Ask R U OK?
  • Listen
  • Encourage action
  • Check in

Sunday’s event was a strong reminder that community connection does not depend on perfect weather — it depends on people showing up for each other. In Nannup, that commitment was clearly on display, creating warmth and positivity that far outweighed the winter cold.

Apryl Longford from the Shire of Nannup and Shealie Tarr from the Community Resource Centre attended the event and assisted in bringing the R U OK? initiative to Nannup and would like to thank everyone who attended and contributed to making the day such a success.
