Students from Nannup District High School recently visited the local cemetery as part of a structured volunteering program designed to build workplace readiness, communication skills, responsibility, and a strong sense of community connection. Hosted by the Cemetery Officer alongside dedicated volunteers from the Friends of the Cemetery group, the students were given an informative and respectful tour of the site. The visit provided an opportunity for the students to learn not only about the daily responsibilities involved in maintaining a public space, but also about the importance of preserving local heritage.
This initial visit marks the beginning of an ongoing partnership, with students set to return regularly to assist with basic gardening tasks and to further explore the rich history of Nannup reflected within the cemetery grounds. Their involvement contributes to a broader community effort led by the Shire of Nannup and the Friends of the Cemetery, particularly the ongoing unmarked graves project. Significant progress has already been made, with plaques placed to honour stillborn children, babies, and young individuals whose resting places were previously unmarked, ensuring their stories are respectfully acknowledged.
The Cemetery Officer recently attended an industry seminar bringing together cemetery officers, undertakers, and other professionals. After sharing the Nannup experience—particularly the success of installing commemorative plaques—the Bunbury Cemetery Board expressed its support for the project. The Board has recognised the dedication and collaboration shown by the Shire and local volunteers in maintaining the cemetery and preserving its history. The Shire of Nannup, together with the Friends of the Cemetery and the wider community, is deeply appreciative of this support, which strengthens the ongoing efforts to honour the past while engaging future generations.
