The Youth Zone program has officially launched, welcoming 10 young people to its first session for a relaxed and engaging afternoon of indoor hockey and fresh scones.
Held weekly on Tuesdays from 3.30pm to 5.30pm at the Recreation Precinct Centre, Youth Zone is a collaborative initiative supported by the Shire of Nannup, Community Development Officer Apryl Longford, and the Community Resource Centre, with Shealie Tarr.
The program provides a safe, welcoming, and informal space for young people to connect—particularly those travelling home on buses from surrounding towns—offering a valuable opportunity to catch up with friends and stay engaged in their local community.
A highlight of the sessions is the shared afternoon tea, with young people not only enjoying scones but also learning how to make them each week—building practical skills while creating a relaxed, social atmosphere.
Early conversations with participants have also identified interest in expanding activities to include creative opportunities such as photography and video, allowing young people to develop new skills while maintaining the flexible, drop-in format.
The program has had a very positive start, and it is encouraging to see young people embracing the opportunity to connect regularly in a supportive and inclusive environment.
