Western Australia’s Container Deposit Scheme (Containers for Change) is expanding, with new containers becoming eligible from 1 July 2026.
The State Government announced the expansion on 10 September 2025. Once the changes commence, a wider range of beverage containers will be included in the scheme, helping to increase recycling and reduce litter.
What containers will be included?
From 1 July 2026, the scheme will expand to include the following containers, between 150ml and 3 litres:
- Fruit and vegetable juice containers
- Flavoured milk containers
- Cordial containers
- Grape wine and spirits in glass bottles
- Grape wine in plastic containers
- Grape wine in sachets
- Grape wine in casks
- Water in casks
Important reminder
These new containers will NOT be accepted until 1 July 2026.
Refund points and collection services will continue operating as usual for currently eligible containers only. Preparing for an expansion of this size takes time, and scheme operators will be working behind the scenes to ensure everything is ready for the start date.
For now:
- Do not return these new containers
- Continue to dispose of them in the correct bin, in line with WasteSorted guidelines
