Despite a cool, cloudy start to the morning, community spirit shone brightly at the 2026 Australia Day Breakfast and Citizen of the Year Awards, held in Nannup on Sunday 26 January. Proudly sponsored by the Australia Day Council and the Shire of Nannup, the event brought together more than 210 community members and visitors to celebrate national pride, local connections and community service.

The venue was beautifully decorated with native floral arrangements prepared by Nannup Garden Village, with a large centerpiece display adorning the presentation tent. Following the event, this display was generously donated to Nannup Hospital. Adding quiet significance to the morning, the Nannup RSL raised the Australian flag, while members of the Nannup Men’s Shed worked behind the scenes to deliver and set up marquees, tables and chairs, creating a welcoming and festive space for all to enjoy.

Proceedings officially commenced with the Nala Boodja Eco Clan, as Michella Hutchins delivered an inspirational Welcome to Country through song. This was followed by the much‑loved Healing Spirit Program, featuring face painting, plant identification activities and a community land art circle. The artwork evolved throughout the morning, becoming a shared creative space that encouraged connection and conversation across generations.

Children were kept thoroughly entertained throughout the event, with the Nannup Lions Club’s miniature train proving a highlight as it travelled back and forth, delighting young passengers and adding to the relaxed, family‑friendly atmosphere.

The Nannup Lions Club also played a central role in catering, cooking and serving breakfast of bacon, eggs and sausages with toast or rolls. Their volunteers efficiently fed the crowd ahead of the formal proceedings. Petite Bleu Coffee Van kept pace with the strong attendance, serving an impressive 173 coffees in just a couple of hours. Live music by The Black Stump Project added to the atmosphere, with many community members singing along to well‑known Australian songs.

Just as the Citizen of the Year presentations were about to begin, a sudden storm swept through the area, bringing strong winds and heavy rain. Community members quickly came together to hold down marquees, while electrical equipment was safely disconnected. In a swift adjustment, keynote singers were relocated under a large marquee, inviting the community to gather and sing the Australian National Anthem, creating a memorable moment of unity.

Despite the challenges, the ceremony continued, led by Deputy Shire President Cr Vicki Hansen, assisted by Cr Cheryle Brown. The absence of amplification created a quiet, attentive atmosphere that highlighted the strength and resilience of the Nannup community. To conclude the morning, families with children received ice‑cream vouchers redeemable at Nanna’s Pantry, Nannup Deli and The Taste of Nannup, supporting local businesses and providing a sweet end to the celebration.

Australia Day in Nannup once again demonstrated why those who live and work here consider themselves fortunate—when community, culture and care come together, even the weather cannot dampen the spirit.
